An Owensboro man has been arrested after burglarizing a home while naked and covered in blood and mud.
The Daviess County Sheriff’s Office said it initially responded early Thursday morning to reports of a naked man running on the roadway, but while en route, dispatch advised deputies of a burglary in progress in the 1900 block of Hwy 1554, near West Fifth Street Road, just west of Owensboro.
Upon arriving, police observed a naked man, later identified as 41-year-old John Stefanopoulos, inside the home covered in blood and mud. He then exited the residence and approached deputies, ignoring their commands for him to lay on the ground. Stefanopoulos proceeded to run toward police, with deputies deploying a taser and striking the suspect in the abdomen.
The Daviess County Sheriff’s Office said the suspect said that he was taking “mushrooms with Jesus” and playing a virtual reality game together.
The investigation showed that the front door of the home had been forced open. Blood was smeared on the walls and windows of the home and holes were punched in several walls.
Stefanopoulos was charged with burglary, criminal mischief, resisting arrest, menacing, public intoxication, and indecent exposure and lodged in the Daviess County Detention Center. He is no longer listed as an inmate.
