The Leitchfield Police Department has captured an accused rapist only minutes after the suspect fled a Stone Street residence.

Thursday morning at approximately 2:35, Leitchfield police responded to a report of a neighbor dispute on Stone Street. While investigating the original call, a female approached Officer DJ Newton and said a man had just raped her, and her husband had the suspect detained in a nearby apartment.

As police went to investigate, the suspect, 49-year-old Shannon T. Deconnna, of Greensburg, fled the area on foot into the darkness, with Newton, Detective Kevin Smith and Officer Tim Moutardier searching for the suspect.

After only a few minutes, Smith and Moutardier captured Deconna a few hundred yards away from the crime scene trying to steal a car parked in the driveway of a Stone Street residence.

Following further investigation by Smith, Deconna was charged with first-degree rape, theft by unlawful taking (automobile), criminal mischief, and public intoxication and lodged in the Grayson County Detention Center.

The victim received treatment at Twin Lakes Regional Medical Center.

Deconna, according to the arrest citation, was “manifestly under the influence of methamphetamine” at the time of the sexual assault. Additionally, the suspect knew the victim and her husband.

Deconna’s criminal history dates to at least 1987, and he has served time in prison in Florida for burglary (armed), escape and burglary of unoccupied structures.
