Kentucky State Police is investigating an officer involved shooting in Pike County.

Sunday morning at approximately 7:00, troopers were dispatched to a residence on Winns Branch Road after receiving information that 33-year-old Cory Whitehead was threatening to harm himself and his father.

Upon arriving at the residence, a trooper met Whitehead’s father and the two men entered the home.

When the unidentified trooper saw Whitehead, the suspect retreated into a room in the residence and retrieved a firearm, according to police.

“An encounter ensued and the trooper gave verbal commands for Whitehead to put the gun down” but he failed to comply as the trooper and Whitehead exchanged gunfire, Kentucky State Police said.

Whitehead sustained a single gunshot wound to the hand and was transported to Pikeville Medical Center where he was treated for his injuries. The trooper was unhurt.

After receiving treatment, Whitehead was lodged in the Pike County Detention Center and charged with attempted murder of a police officer and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
