In a cautionary tale, a woman has died from carbon monoxide poisoning after using a generator inside a home.

Kentucky State Police said that Tuesday at noon, troopers responded to Spring Cut Circle in southern Laurel County to assist local emergency workers. KSP said the initial investigation revealed the home was without power due to the winter storm and the occupants of the residence, including 61-year-old Darlene G. Skinner, of Corbin, had been using a “fuel-operated generator” to help power a sump pump in the basement. The generator was located in a garage area with no ventilation, according to Lily Fire and Rescue.

Skinner was transported to Baptist Health Corbin where she was pronounced dead by the ER doctor.

Her husband, Tony Ragland, and their grandchild were transported to the University of Kentucky Medical Center where both were treated and released.

Officials warn that generators should only be used outside and be positioned at least 20 feet away from windows.
