A driver who ran over cardboard boxes escaped injury after the vehicle caught on fire.

Sunday night at approximately 7:10, the Leitchfield Fire Department responded to the 101-mile marker of eastbound Western Kentucky Parkway after a Jeep Renegade caught fire.

According to Leitchfield Fire Chief Tim Duvall, the female driver, from Paducah, said she ran over a couple of cardboard boxes and a few miles later noticed something strange, possibly sparks, in her rear-view mirror. She pulled over and exited the vehicle along with her two small dogs, with flames soon becoming visible.

By the time firefighters could arrive, the Jeep was fully engulfed in flames. It took LFD about 15 minutes to extinguish the blaze.

Duvall said he believes the boxes became lodged against the vehicle’s exhaust pipes, resulting in the fire.

No injuries were reported, and firefighters cleared the scene at approximately 8:45.

Grayson County Deputy Justin Cockerel and Sgt. Jason Luedke assisted at the scene.
