The uptick in COVID-19 cases in Grayson County has progressed to a surge.

Two weeks ago, the county reported 52 new cases to the Kentucky Department for Public Health, and last week the Grayson County Health Department (GCHD) reported 59 new cases of the virus to state health officials.

The 101 two week total of new cases has compelled the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to place the county into the “medium” category, indicating a medium level of spread of the virus in the community.

Illustrating the sudden increase in cases, only three weeks the county reported 32 new cases.

“We are seeing cluster cases of the virus for the first time in months,” GCHD Director Josh Horton said.

The county’s positivity rate, which stood at 11.5 percent two weeks, was 17.07 percent for the week ending Sunday, a 286 percent increase in the key metric since the positivity rate checked in at 5.96 percent a month ago.

(Positivity rate statistics do not include residents who conduct home tests and do not report results to the GCHD).

One new COVID-related death was reported last week, increasing the county’s death toll to 135.

Since the onset of the pandemic, Grayson Co. has had 8,224 cases of the virus diagnosed.
