Grayson and surrounding counties are under an air quality alert on Thursday.

The National Weather Service said the Air Quality Index stood at 140 Thursday morning, which is “unhealthy for sensitive groups.”

According to the American Lung Association (ALA), low air quality is a threat to “children, active adults and people with respiratory diseases such as asthma.”

If in any of those groups, one should “avoid prolonged outdoor exertion, while others should limit prolonged outdoor exertion.”

The Air Quality Index, or AQI, is the system used to warn the public when air pollution is dangerous, according to the ALA.

“The AQI tracks ozone (smog) and particle pollution (tiny particles from ash, power plants and factories, vehicle exhaust, soil dust, pollen, and other pollution), as well as four other widespread air pollutants,” the ALA said. “Keeping track of current air quality information can help you take steps to protect yourself, children, and others from unhealthy levels of air pollution.”
