The remains of a soldier from Leitchfield who was killed during World War II are being returned to Kentucky.

Pfc. Charles W. Wells, 21, was an infantryman who served in the China-Burma-India theater with Company G, 2nd Battalion, 5307th Composite Unit (Provisional), also referred to as Task Force Galahad or Merrill’s Marauders, according to the Defense Visual Information Distribution Service (DVIDS).

His unit fought in the siege of Myitkyina, Burma, on June 30, 1944, after successfully taking the airfield west of Myitkyina from Japanese control.

Following the battle, Wells was reported killed in action. His remains were not immediately identified. Wells, according to the DVIDS, was accounted for by the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency on May 26, 2023, following laboratory analysis of his remains.

Wells’ remains were scheduled to arrive at Muhammed Ali International Airport on Thursday night, WDRB.com reports.

A graveside service with military honors will be held November 16 at 11:00 a.m. at the Kentucky Veterans Cemetery Central in Radcliff.

Visitation will take place November 16 from 9:00 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. at Chism Family Funeral Home in Vine Grove.
