Grayson County High School could have up to eight students representing the school at either Governor’s Scholars or Governor’s School for the Arts Programs this summer.
Brody Cole, Jada Colley, Piper Mangan, Anneliese McCray, and Stella Rogers have been selected to attend the Governor’s Scholars Program (GSP). Emelia Thurman and Marley Lucas were selected as alternates.
In addition, Divya Patel was one of only 40 students statewide selected to attend the Governor’s School for the Arts for Visual Arts.
The GSP selection process includes a rigorous and lengthy application that showcases academics, extracurricular activities, service, honors, and awards. Community and teacher recommendations, and a personal essay round out the requirements. Each year more than 2,000 applications are typically received, of which only 1,020 students are selected to attend.
Students will accept or decline their invitation by May. Shortly after, they will learn which campus (Centre College, Morehead State University, or Murray State University) and five-week session they will attend, as well as which focus area they will study.
Tuition, room and board, class supplies, and program activities are completely paid for by the Commonwealth of Kentucky and private donors. Families must only provide transportation to and from the campus. Plus, the experience opens the door to numerous scholarship opportunities.
Governor’s School for the Arts (GSA) is a similar, three-week program hosted on Northern Kentucky University’s campus in June. Divya assembled a diverse portfolio of her visual art projects as well as a self-made video about her interest in the program.
GSA is free for accepted students and opens the door to scholarship opportunities at nearly 30 colleges/universities.
The program began in 1987 and provides an immersive experience in Instrumental Music, Architecture & Design, Creative Writing, Dance, Drama, Film & Photography, Graphic Design, Musical Theater, Visual Art, and Vocal Music.
