Wanda Jean Higdon, age 86, a beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on May 15, 2026, at Spring View Nursing and Rehab in Leitchfield. Born on July 19, 1939, in Peonia, Kentucky, she was the daughter of the late Leo and Alma Grace Clemons Pierce.
Wanda was a dedicated member of St. Elizabeth Catholic Church and cherished her time spent with the American Legion Post #81 Ladies’ Auxiliary. In her quieter moments, you could often find her delighting in episodes of Gunsmoke with a refreshing wine cooler by her side – simple pleasures that brought her joy.
She leaves behind a loving family, including her sons, Jonathon Higdon (Tracy), William Patrick Higdon (Phyllis) and David Higdon (Renee); along with a treasured legacy of nine grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. Wanda is also survived by her daughter-in-law, Janie Higdon, and her siblings, Lorena Meredith and Anthony Pierce (Hope).
Wanda is now reunited with her husband, James Altus Higdon, who predeceased her on August 21, 2018, along with her son, James Douglas Higdon, and several siblings, Janet Pierce, Walter Pierce, Rosella Saltsman, Vinetta Cantrell, Joseph Paul Pierce, Johanna Roberts, Beatrice Carnes, Charles Pierce and Gregory Pierce. We will hold her memory close to our hearts as we gather to celebrate her beautiful life.
Funeral services for Wanda will be held at 12:00 PM (Noon) on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, at Leitchfield Funeral Home, with Father Stephen Van Lal Than officiating. Following the service, Wanda will be laid to rest in St. Elizabeth Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to pay their respects during visitation, which will take place from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Monday and again from 9:00 AM until the service time on Tuesday at the funeral home.
Wanda’s spirit lives on through the love she gave and the memories she created. We invite you to share your condolences and reflections online at www.leitchfieldfh.com. Let’s come together to honor this remarkable woman who touched the lives of so many.
