The Grayson County Health Department (GCHD) has released the locations of two additional free naloxone dispensary locations in Grayson County.
“In 2024, Grayson County ranked in the top 10 list of Kentucky counties with the highest non-fatal drug-related overdose visits to emergency rooms. This data validates the need for harm reduction in our local communities,” the GCHD says on its website.
Naloxone, sold under the brand name Narcan, is used to reverse opioid overdoses as the drug counteracts life-threatening depression of the central nervous and respiratory systems, allowing an opioid overdose victim to breathe normally.
Naloxone is a nonscheduled (non-addictive), prescription medication. It only works if a person has opioids in their system, as the medication has no effect if opioids are not present.
“Although traditionally administered by emergency response personnel, naloxone can be administered by minimally trained laypeople, which makes it ideal for treating overdose in people who have been prescribed opioid pain medication and in people who use heroin and other opioids,” according to the National Harm Reduction Coalition.
