A Hardin County man has been jailed after allegedly stealing more than $39,000 for his late mother-in-law’s bank account.

Police arrested 65-year-old James P. Walker, of Radcliff, and charged him with knowingly exploiting an adult (over $300) and theft by failure to make required disposition (over $10,000). Both charges are class C felonies.

Walker is accused of stealing the money over a period of four months after the death of his wife in 2018. She had power of attorney over her mother’s estate, according to the News-Enterprise.

ATM surveillance photographs shows Walker making the withdrawals.

Police also arrested 22-year-old Taylor Smith, of Vine Grove, who is accused of stealing $1,000 from Walker’s deceased mother-in-law’s account. The News-Enterprise reports that Smith is related to the woman.

Both suspects were lodged in the Hardin County Detention Center. Smith has been released on bond while Walker remains jailed on a $5,000 bond.
