Grayson County High School senior Marinah Akridge has signed to play soccer at the University of the Cumberlands (UC).

In a signing announcement at the high school on Wednesday afternoon, Akridge was accompanied by her parents, coaches, and about a dozen of her teammates and friends. Also joining the ceremony via a Zoom call was UC graduate assistant Quentin Boric.

The midfielder started every game this past season for the Lady Cougar soccer team tallying two assists while also being one of the main defenders on the field.

Head coach Bailey VanMeter, speaking to Bostic, said, “you have a great pick on your hands, not only is she a great hard worker on the field, but she is also going to do great in the classroom and great at your all’s university in general.

Akridge’s parents, Bruce and Tami, both spoke as she was signing. Bruce said, “we are really proud of Marinah, she’s worked really hard in soccer and she has enjoyed it for all of these years.”

Her mom, Tami, added, “I would have never dreamed that when she started in second grade that she would be going to college playing soccer.”

On Akridge, Bostic said, “it is clear to me how hard of a worker (she) is by just speaking with her.”

The Lady Patriots are an NAIA team that competes in the Mid-South Conference. Currently, they are ranked as the #8 team in the nation with a record of 12-1.

Akridge will join the team for the fall 2021 season that typically begins in mid-to-late August. You can watch the ceremony at the link below.
