A Leitchfield man has suffered critical injuries in a truck versus ATV accident on Sunbeam Road.

Sunday night at approximately 7:00, Grayson County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Jason Luedke and Deputies Sean Fentress and Caleb Owens, Constable Mark Stanton, the Leitchfield Fire Department, and EMS responded to the accident in the 3300 block of Sunbeam Road.

Upon arriving at the scene, first responders found that an ATV, being driven north by 61-year-old Ronnie Decker, attempted to turn left into a driveway when he turned directly into the path of a southbound Ford F250 truck, according to witnesses.

The ATV struck the Ford’s front driver’s side tire, tossing Decker from the ATV and onto the roadway. The Ford, in an attempt to miss the ATV, drove off the roadway into a yard before coming to a stop back on the road about 50 yards from the ATV.

Decker was transported by EMS to Owensboro Health Twin Lakes Medical Center before being airlifted to University of Louisville Hospital with critical injuries.

A juvenile in the truck was evaluated by EMS personnel after the truck’s back window was shattered by two large wooden barrels that were in the bed of the truck.

This accident marks the second time over the weekend that a vehicle not legally on a roadway was involved in an accident.

On Saturday night at about 8:30, Constable Mark Stanton responded to a vehicle versus a “homemade ATV” at the intersection of Lilac Road and Cave Creek Road.

In that accident, the victim suffered very minor injuries, although Stanton said he was shocked the victim was not killed.

As a reminder, ATVs and golf carts are not allowed to drive on any Grayson County roadways, with the exception of compliant golf carts inside the Leitchfield city limits where the speed limit is 35 mph or slower.
