The man who shot and killed his wife and her parents just outside Morgantown 13 months ago has additionally been charged with molesting a juvenile on multiple occasions.

Joseph Michael Carey, 33, of Bowling Green, was indicted by a Warren County Grand Jury on four counts of first-degree sexual abuse and first-degree sodomy.

The indictment accuses Carey of having forcible sexual contact with a 12-year-old over several months in 2020.

Carey is facing the death penalty for murdering his estranged wife, 30-year-old Angela R. Carey, and her parents, 79-year-old Charles W. McGranahan and 63-year-old Lupe V. McGranhan, at their residence at 88 Lonnie Snodgrass Road, just off Hwy 79. All three victims had been shot multiple times and were pronounced dead at the scene by the Butler County Coroner’s Office.

The killings took place on the morning of January 19, 2021, as Joseph and Angela Carey’s three small children hid in the home. Joseph Carey had been served with divorce papers in December 2020.

Carey was arrested at the residence and confessed his actions to a Butler Count constable, who was the first law enforcement official to arrive on scene.

Kentucky State Police Detective Shae Foley testified at Joseph Carey’s preliminary hearing that he estimated Carey fired a handgun at least 30 times during the killing spree. State police detectives also said that only days before the murders, Carey “met with a psychiatrist at an area hospital” while being screened “on another matter, and doctors determined that he was not a risk for suicide or to harm others.”

A few weeks after the murders, Commonwealth’s Attorney Blake Chambers filed a notice with the court that he intended to seek the death penalty in the case.

Carey is being held in the Butler County Jail.
