A man convicted in Ohio County four times on felony drug, burglary and other charges has been federally indicted on multiple firearm violations.

A federal grand jury in Bowling Green returned an indictment this month charging 53-year-old Ronald J. Philpot with making false statements in acquisition of a firearm, receipt of a firearm by a prohibited person and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, according to Michael A. Bennett, the U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Kentucky.

According to the indictment, on January 3, 2024, Philpot made false written statements intended to deceive a licensed firearms dealer on a Department of Justice, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives form 4473, Firearms Transaction Record.

“Specifically, Philpot stated he was not under indictment for a crime punishable by imprisonment for a term exceeding one year and was not a convicted felon, when in fact he knew he was a convicted felon currently under indictment for another felony offense,” prosecutors said.

On January 9, 2024, according to prosecutors, Philpot was in possession of a Taurus 9mm semi-automatic pistol.

Philpot was previously convicted of the following felony offenses.

  • On May 1, 2018, in Ohio Circuit Court, Philpot was convicted of possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine)
  • On April 28, 2015, in Ohio Circuit Court, Philpot was convicted of flagrant non-support
  • On April 14, 2008, in Ohio Circuit Court, Philpot was convicted flagrant non-support
  • On May 16, 1990, in Ohio Circuit Court, Philpot was convicted of burglary in the third degree

Philpot is currently in federal custody pending trial. He faces a maximum of 30 years in prison if convicted.

There is no parole in the federal system.
