A double murder in Elizabethtown was a car deal turned deadly, according to testimony at the suspect’s trial.
The murders took place on the afternoon of May 13, 2020, in the 100 block of Patterson Street. When Elizabethtown police arrived at the scene, officers found two men and a woman inside a Hyundai Elantra suffering from gunshot wounds.
The men, 32-year-old Shawn Fox and 37-year-old Michael B. Thomas, both of Hopkinsville, were pronounced dead at the scene. The female, now identified as Kenia Thomas, of Henderson (no relation to Michael Thomas), was transported to University of Louisville Hospital in critical condition. She, though, survived the shooting.
Kenia Thomas said in court, according to The News-Enterprise, that she and the two decedents had driven from Henderson to meet with Reed about purchasing a vehicle. Fox had $9,000 in cash on him at the time of his death, presumably to pay for the automobile. The money, Kenia Thomas said, belonged to her and Fox, who was her boyfriend.
Kenia Thomas testified that Reed got into the Elantra for 40 minutes, the newspaper reports, as he said he was waiting for his girlfriend so they all could enter her apartment. At some point, Fox left the vehicle to use the restroom, with Reed also exiting the vehicle. When Reed returned, he shot Michael Thomas in the head before shooting Fox in the head and neck. He then shot Kenia Thomas.
Reed was charged with two counts of murder, first-degree assault, possession of a handgun by a convicted felon and second-degree persistent felony offender.
Reed’s trial continues in a Hardin County courtroom.
